David Globe, Student

GLOBE, David Norman -

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Globe on Saturday April 4th 2026 in his 67th year, with his family at his side. Cherished son of the late Jeanette and Albert (Pete). Loving husband to Anabela with whom they shared 25 beautiful years of marriage. Beloved brother to Brian Globe (Chris), Margaret Mills (Rick Barnett), Donna Johnson, Kenneth Globe (Elizabeth), and predeceased by brother Ronald Globe (Santa). David was a proud ,loving uncle and will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.

David was a man who saw the world in ways that went far beyond sight. Living as a blind individual, he transformed what many might consider a limitation into a powerful lens of understanding, empathy, and connection. Through his volunteer work, David dedicated himself to helping others better understand not only blindness, but the richness and depth of life experienced through different perspectives.

He gave his time generously, speaking openly about his journey and offering insight that challenged assumptions and inspired compassion. Whether through community involvement, conversations, or quiet acts of kindness, David worked tirelessly to bridge gaps in understanding and remind others that ability is not defined by vision, but by heart and determination.

David's efforts left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to learn from him. He didn't just advocate for awareness—he lived it, showing others how to navigate the world with courage, curiosity, and grace. His legacy is one of education, resilience, and a deep commitment to making the world more inclusive for everyone.

To honour David's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life in honour of David and His Mother Jeanette's life will be held May 9th at 11 am at St Columba Presbyterian Church at 520 Bridge St E Belleville. There will be a time to share memories, some of their favourite hymns and a light lunch. Memorial donations to St. Columba Presbyterian Church - Belleville and/or a charity of choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Nancy Lynn Johnson, Staff

JOHNSON – Nancy Lynn (née Comer

May 23, 1947 – January 16, 2026

Nancy Lynn Johnson (née Comer), in her 79th year, was the kind of person who made the world softer simply by being in it.

Born in Brantford, Ontario, on May 23, 1947 to the late Lyle and Eleanor Comer (Anderson). Nancy passed peacefully after a short illness on January 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of lasting love.

Nancy had a generous heart and an adventurous spirit. She cared deeply for others, offering kindness through quiet acts and a steady presence. She embraced life with curiosity, joy and fun. She loved to travel and shared many adventures with her beloved husband, Ken, creating a lifetime of memories. Nancy lived to care for those around her. Whether through acts of generosity, unwavering support, or simply showing up when someone needed her, she expressed love through action. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, safe, and valued. She was love in all its forms.

For 30 years, Nancy worked at the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind (Residential Manager – Junior School), where her compassion and patience touched countless lives. Serving others was not just her profession, it was who she was. A talented quilter and active member of the Paris Quilt Bees, Nancy poured her love and creativity into every stitch. Like Nancy, her quilts were thoughtful, comforting, and created to be shared. Nancy was also a longtime sorority member of the Brantford chapter of Preceptor Alpha Zeta.

Above all else, Nancy cherished her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Ken Johnson, her daughters, Kory Martin (Troy Appleby) and Emily Johnson (John Conyon), and her treasured grandchildren, John Bielic (Lily) and Neve Conyon, who knew her as the most loving Nan. Her family was her greatest joy, and her love for them was constant, unconditional, and deeply felt. Nancy also shared a close bond with her sisters, Kate Forbes (Robert), the late Connie Moyer (Terry), and Barbara Hodge (the late, Ken), and was dearly loved by her nieces and nephews. She was a treasured friend to many, nurturing relationships with warmth, sincerity, and care. Nancy and Ken enjoyed their winters in Florida with the Timber Pines crew. To know Nancy was to be loved by her. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering loyalty will be profoundly missed, but her example will continue to live on through all those whose lives she touched.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Reeve, Dr. Kruisselbrink and the amazing Critical Care Team at the Brantford General Hospital, especially Hyacinth, Abby, Angela, Stephanie and Respirology for their professionalism and exceptional care. A special thank you to Dr. Satia, McMaster Health Sciences.

Arrangements have been entrusted to McCleister Funeral Home, 495 Park Road N. Brantford. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held in May around her birthday. Details to be shared at a later date. Cheryl Krug-Wiltse, Staff

Cheryl Krug-Wiltse

Cheryl Krug-Wiltse passed away on January 10, 2026, peacefully and surrounded by family. Cheryl was born April 4th, 1962 to Larry and Carolyn Krug. She enjoyed a rural childhood near Glen Morris, Ontario, with frequent trips across the field to her beloved grandmothers house (Kay Rosebrugh).

Cheryl is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, PJ, and her children, Patrick and Kate. She will be missed by many extended family members, lifelong friends, and community members who she connected with through her art and teaching.

Cheryl spent her early career as an educational assistant for W. Ross MacDonald School (which she adored) and the Grand Erie District School Board. She was an award-winning rug hooker with JJ Ruggers and spent her later career teaching rug hooking. Her students quickly became friends, attending her weekly sessions for her company in addition to her expertise.

Cheryl spent her free time crafting, gardening, and-most precious to her-spending quality time with her beloved family and friends. She will be remembered for her kind, nonjudgmental nature, her magnetic smile, her artistic talent, and her resilience. She saw the beauty in the world and made the world more beautiful for those around her.

Cheryl battled cancer for 20 years, though you'd have hardly known it. She was stubbornly optimistic, never complaining or seeming sorry for herself. Despite a series of formidable diagnoses, she spent very little time being sick. Though she was taken from us too soon, she lived a full life and she leaves a legacy of courage and positivity.

Friends will be welcomed at the Dwayne D. Budgell Funeral Home, 1105 Rest Acres Road, Paris, ON, on Saturday January 17, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. In Cheryl's memory, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Susan Louise Yaremczuk, Staff

Susan (Sue) Louise Yaremczuk (ne Grant)

November 19, 1946 - December 31st, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Susan Louise Yaremczuk, wish to announce the passing of Susan Louise Yaremczuk.

If the destination is Life's journey, then we have always already arrived. A tirelessly devoted and loyal grandmother [Eliyanah (Baskin/Yaremczuk), Alexander and Sebastien (Fonseca), Markus and Eva (Rungis/Mackenzie)], mother [Christina, Peter (Fonseca), Nicholas, Donna (Mackenzie), Tobias (d. Dec 16 '22) and Natasha], wife [(Dr. Eugene Yaremczuk-d. Aug 12 2013)], and daughter [Russell, Doris (Brooks) Grant, Taras and Katherine (Hillibun) Yaremczuk].

Susan was a lover of adventure through travel, a patron, in spirit, of sport and the arts, a chronicler of ancestry, and a spinner of tales through her love of writing and publishing her own fictional works and poetry. Vibrant and extroverted, there was seldom a social gathering she attended where her voice was unheard. Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, she graduated from North Park Collegiate and then University of Toronto in 1969 as a physio/occupational therapist, met her husband Gene while interning in Guelph, and spent much of her career during and after raising children, working at the Scott Physiotherapy Clinic and the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind in Brantford.

She lived vicariously through the athletic, academic, artistic, and musical endeavours of her children and grandchildren and travelled abroad frequently with her husband, Gene, as well as friends and family up until days before her passing. May your loving devotion, support, gift of travel and adventures, and yarns and tales put to paper, continue to weave its magic through our hearts and souls.

Special thanks to the gals at Beta Sigma Phi in Paris who have always been there, and Joanne Webber who has been a co-adventurer, friend, honorary sister, mother and grandmother to Sue and family.

A special thank you to all of the incredible nurses and doctors at Trillium Health Partners, in particular in the Cardiac Patient Care Unit & Coronary Care Unit, Mississauga who provided, exceptional care, including Cardiologist Dr. Sumeet Gandhi, to Sue in her final days.

In keeping with Sue's expressed wishes, donations of organs and tissue, including for medical research and teaching, have been made to Trillium Gift of Life and cremation will follow.

An announcement for a memorial gathering will be made at a later time to celebrate Sue and share memories.

A Constant Bloom

A garden she tended, not of roses or greens,
But of moments and laughter and beautiful scenes.
Her presence was warmth, a continuous bloom,
Chasing the shadows right out of a room.

She was larger than life, a weather event,
A whirlwind of laughter, wherever she went.
A smile that could rival the morning sun's best,
That she lovingly wore like a colourful vest.

She's the spark in the room when the party begins,
The spirit that soared on the slightest of winds.
Her energy lingered, a persistent, bright hum,
A vibrant reminder of all that's to come.

Her heart had no measure, no ceiling, no floor,
A generous welcome to one and all at her door.
She poured her energy, never held back,
A boundless compassion we now sorely lack.

Though her physical form has now drifted from view,
Her essence remains in the things we continue to do.
The kindness we offer, the joyful stories that we share,
Is the living, breathing legacy of her loving care.

Carol Verity

February 24, 1936 – November 2, 2025

We announce with great sadness the unexpected passing of our mother, Carol Verity (Griffiths), of Brantford and Magnetawan, at Huntsville Hospice on November 2, 2025. Carol was born in Toronto where she lived in Leaside with her parents the late Malcolm S. and Marie Griffiths (Barnard) and her younger brother Tom Griffiths, (Orillia), a lifelong friend. After graduating from Leaside High, Carol obtained her BA in zoology and music from Trinity College and a teacher’s certificate from OISE. Carol’s teaching career took her to the Yukon and later; after raising her family, she taught music at the W. Ross MacDonald School for the Blind in Brantford where she mastered the skill of transcribing music Braille for her students and inspiring a standard of excellence that many of her students achieved.

Carol had many roles and interests. For more than 62 years she was the beloved wife to her late husband, Dick (R.L. Verity). Together they built, in Brantford and Magnetawan, a life of love, support and opportunity for their three children and grandchild, Louise (Mac Penney) (Toronto), Denise, (Nashville), Patrick (Girdwood), and granddaughter Caroline (Thomas Millar) (Austin). Aside from her family, Carol’s greatest joys were music and the outdoors. Carol was a skilled and accomplished musician. She was a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto obtaining her ARCT certificate in piano. She also studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England.

Carol was an active volunteer and participant in various community choral events. She loved being outdoors where she could follow her passion for birding, canoe tripping and kayaking in the company of her friends and family. Carol was widely traveled but for her, no geography or territory could top roughing it in the Canadian North or Alaska. Carol was also an enthusiastic reader who regularly reviewed newspapers, focusing on the business section, particularly after she began trading in her late sixties. With her death, the Globe and Mail has lost a loyal reader. Carol was kind and engaging to all, always a great listener. Carol’s iron will, laughter and love are irreplaceable. She will be greatly missed. We are grateful for the care and support provided by Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (Huntsville) and Hospice Huntsville. A private family celebration of life will be held at Ahmic Lake consistent with Carol’s wishes.

As expressions of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Carol’s memory to Epilepsy Canada, The Magnetawan Watershed Land Trust, Hospice Huntsville or a charity of choice. Arrangements have been entrusted with Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Ave., Brantford, 519-752-4331.

A tree will be planted in memory of Carol in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest

RAWN, Kyle David Rawn

”Shut your eyes and see” (Ulysses, by James Joyce) captures the life & spirit of our beloved and beautiful son, Kyle David Rawn, born December 11, 1980 in Ajax, Ontario. Kyle hit one out of the park on Thursday, Oct 2, 2025, after a long hard fought battle. He was just 2 months shy of his 45th birthday.

Kyle spent his childhood in Ajax where he excelled in academics and developed an enthusiastic love for life, friendship, sports & music. He attended Carlton University in Ottawa and graduated with degrees in Radio Broadcasting and Sports Management from Algonquin College. While attending school in Ottawa Kyle met Brett, John & Eric and joined the music scene drumming for Mossy Roots Band and later in Toronto as an integral member of Avery Island. He was a natural musician and he made an unforgettable impression on audiences both on & off stage.

Kyle’s calendar went like this..Spring & Summer was reserved for the Blue Jays, Sundays & Mondays for NFL football, particularly the Raiders, Fall brought the Maple Leafs & Gennies but mostly just till Spring when the Leaf’s were out and the Jay’s started a new season. To fill the gaps in game days, there was World Cup Soccer, Tennis and even Hurling!!! He knew the players, their records & the coaching staff which prompted his volunteer roles broadcasting the games for Ottawa Ladies Links soccer team & later the Jr C Port Perry Mojacks. It’s doubtful those teams would ever have another commentator with as much passion for the game.

Kyle was that solid guy and loyal big brother to Cory & Annalise. They were mutually passionate about sports & music and later in life they shared the family’s inherent fondness for cooking. That and an abundance of love for each other kept them close, always finding another exciting event to attend or chat about late into the night.

Kyle made lifelong friends and maintained loving relationships with them throughout his life. His friends mostly found him remarkable, and he seemed to have a pocketful of charm whenever an opportunity for meeting new people presented itself. Kyle kept his many friends close, even during the last difficult months. Thank you, to all of them, especially his partner, Anne Marie, Jason & Janelle, Sean & Bronson, Paul & Theresa, Olliver, Brett, Spraggs & Michelle McQuigge. Your kindness and support kept him in the game every day!

His good friend and business partner Colin McCarthy described Kyle as a man ‘who was passionate about removing barriers for persons with disabilities’. As such he spent close to 15 years in the Accessibility Industry. He worked as a consultant for Accessibility Professionals of Ontario, and later as sole proprietor of VocalEyes. Kyle visited building sites, gathered information not only from a vision disability standpoint but picked up knowledge of a variety of disability related barriers and applied them in his findings.

Colin added, “Over the years Kyle became an indispensable part of the operation. He was my go -to-guy for all things digital. Not only Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and Accessible Canada Act (ACA) to which he made sure the client’s websites were compliant and accessible but he also helped me with frustrations with computer systems. He was all I could ask for as a colleague and a friend, and he will be missed.”

Kyle will also be missed by all those he touched. Especially by his partner & friend Ann Marie, her children Emma & Dylan, her grandson Cameron and her parents Bea & Jim.

Kyle will be forever loved by His parents Brenda & Steve, his sister Annalise (Andrew), Leah (Scott) his brother Cory (Natasha), his Grandmother Sheila, his Aunts Trish (Dave), Joanne (Phill), Theresa (Paul), Carol, Cathy (Perry) and Uncles Dan, Brian (AnnMarie) and Bill (Leslie). His nieces & nephews, Avalyn, Ellis & Jackson, Evi, Ella, Emmett. His many cousins, especially Sean & Bronson. Kyle was predeceased by his adoring grandfather, Lenny.

Many thanks & appreciation to His Durham Home Health Team, especially Alicia and his incredible Oshawa Cancer Care team Dr’s Broomfield “the Grim Sweeper” and Dr Kay ‘Armeen, the Assassin”

CLIFTON JOHN LORIMER

15-Jan-1951 - 22-Sep-2025

Long-time East York resident Cliff Lorimer passed away recently in his 75th year. Cliff was predeceased by his parents, Les Lorimer and Lillian Lorimer (nee Athelstan), and he is survived by his loving partner, Debbie Guertin.

Blind from birth, Cliff developed a very sharp sense of hearing and a love of music. After attending the Ontario School for the Blind, followed by high school at Birchmount Collegiate in Scarborough, he pursued radio broadcasting at Humber College. He then began a career as a DJ at CKPG radio in Prince George, BC, before moving back east to continue this work at CKDK Radio in Woodstock, On. During this time, he participated in a telethon sponsored by Canadian rock legend Burton Cummings, and this led to a lifelong friendship with Burton. Nothing gave Cliff greater pleasure than receiving phone calls from Burton, attending Burton’s concerts, listening to his albums and singing his songs. Later in his career, Cliff worked the phones at Q107, Frontier Computing and for the band Blue Rodeo.

Another highlight for Cliff occurred in 1979, when the Rolling Stones played a benefit concert in Oshawa in support of the Canadian Institute for the Blind. Being a blind DJ, Cliff was invited to share the stage at one point with host John Belushi. A memorable occasion indeed.

Cliff was a serious collector of both vinyl records and CDs, somehow managing to store thousands of them in his apartment, all carefully labelled in braille.

Cliff was a gracious person with a great sense of humour, and he will be missed by Debbie and her sister Donna, his cousins and many friends in the radio business. Donations in Cliff’s memory can be made to the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca) or Diabetes Canada (www.diabetes.ca).

Cremation has taken place, and, at a later date, an interment service will be held at the Necropolis in Toronto, where Cliff will be reunited with his parents, followed by a celebration of life.

Vickie Margaret Kovacs (Hedden) Obituary

August 14, 1958 - August 3, 2025

On Sunday, August 3, after a courageous almost 7-year battle with cancer; Vickie died in the presence of her family. While she had hoped for a longer life, she did live a very full life.

Vickie was a loving wife to Phil for 45 years and a devoted mother to the late Karli, Alexa (Scott) and Jeremy (Lindsey). She cherished every moment she was able to spend with her grandchildren Samuel and Marissa. Vickie will be deeply missed by her siblings, Evie (Patrick), Bernice (David), Cheryl and Thomas, Cathy (Phil) and Shannon (Dan), and many nephews and nieces.

Vickie enjoyed a very rewarding career at the W. Ross Macdonald School. She spent 42 years helping children, adults and families as a Resource Consultant and Deafblind Intervenor. After her retirement she returned to work for Sensity Deafblind Support Network and volunteered for the local Kindness Centre. Her passion for helping and teaching will be remembered by all of those she served and worked with for decades to come.

She was a wonderful and generous friend to many. She enjoyed spending her time day tripping, chatting over coffee, attending art festivals, shopping, and crafting thoughtful gifts for others. Vickie loved to travel and was able to enjoy several trips. After visiting many times, she had fallen in love with Nova Scotia and dreamed of exploring more of the East Coast if only she had been given more time.

Vickie will be reunited in spirit with her first-born daughter Karli. While her life has ended, her legacy and memory will live on; as Vickie's kindness and strength have left a positive impact on so many of us.

A celebration of life will be held at the Dunsdon Legion on Friday August 22, 6-9pm. All friends and family are welcome.

"What we once enjoyed we can never lose, all that we love deeply becomes a part of us." - Helen Keller

BURDETT , Helen Mary Burdett

In memory of Helen who passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Predeceased by her beloved husband Michael (2021) and her son John (2022). Survived by her loving children Catherine (Allan), and Neill (Lisa), who provided unwavering love and support through her many health challenges. Missed by their children and her grandchildren Nick (Madi), Vanessa, Katie (Tom), and Jack.

Also survived by her son Martin and his family, including Helen’s only great grandchild, Nora.

Helen spent the last almost three years in the care of the wonderful staff of St. Peter’s Hospital on Maplewood Drive in Hamilton. She was treated with kindness and respect in her final years despite her difficulties. We will always be grateful to the staff and administration for allowing Helen into your program and the incredible support she received.

Born and raised in England, Helen lived in Quebec as a teenager with her parents and siblings. The family returned to England and Helen’s goal to always come back to her beloved Canada was realized in 1974. Helen and Mick settled in Brantford, and she stayed home to raise their four children into their teens. She then worked as a receptionist at the Wayne Gretzky Centre and finally at W. Ross Macdonald School as a secretary until early retirement at 55.

She was an excellent knitter (passing the skill down to her granddaughter), handy with a sewing machine, and proficient in the dying art of shorthand. She enjoyed their Sunday barbecues with family and friends, bowling, and their favorite spots in North Carolina and Manitoulin Island.

Private final arrangements have been made.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to: www.hamiltonhealth.ca/donatememorial — please direct the donation to St. Peter’s Hospital, Behavioural Health Program, in memory of Helen Burdett. Thank you.

In Loving Memory of Hailey Prince

With broken hearts we share the peaceful passing of Hailey, at the age of 38, after a long and courageous battle with Mitochondrial disease. Hailey received her wings, surrounded by the love of her family, at the Stedman Community Hospice on Saturday, June 28, 2025. A cherished daughter of Debbie Prince, whose devotion as both mother and caregiver was a beautiful testament to unconditional love. Hailey was the pride and joy of her dad, the late Kelly Prince (Nov. 2021). Hailey was a loving sister to Tara Capinding (Eddie) and will be reunited with her sister Stacey, gone before her in January 2022. Being Auntie Hailey to Jada and Chase, was one her greatest joys, she adored them with all her heart. Hailey is the cherished granddaughter to her Nana, Gail Davis, and Papa, the late Cal Davis (June 1996). She brought love and laughter into the lives of her grandparents, the late Sid & Evelyn Prince (2012) who held a special place in their hearts. Hailey will be missed deeply by her loving aunts, uncles and many cousins. Hailey graduated from W. Ross MacDonald School for the Blind, where she met many of her lifelong friends.

Hailey’s love for animals, especially her guide dog and best friend Tussel, (2014), was one of her most beautiful qualities – her caring heart and nurturing soul, touching the lives of all that knew her. Her passions were simple yet profound, her gift for making others smile and the special moments shared with family. She was passionate about the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Raptors and could tell you, all of their stats, which was just a touch of her trivia knowledge of random facts! She loved to play cards with the girls and found happiness in spoiling her favourite little ones. Hailey had the biggest heart, always showing compassion for others. Her need for assistance, never dimmed her independence and her desire to help others. Hailey had a fiery spirit and a heart full of sweetness, she was strong-willed and never shy about speaking her mind, often with her sharp wit and a sparkle of humour. Hailey moved through this life, beyond the boundaries of her body and faced the challenges that life presented her with, with strength and grace. Hailey is an inspiration to us all. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her generous heart and unwavering devotion to her family. Hailey made this world a better place and we are blessed to have had her for as long as we did.

Although her pain is gone, our hearts are heavy with the immeasurable loss. She will always be loved, forever in our hearts and never forgotten.

Fly high sweet girl!

Our family would like to extend a special thank you to her many Dr’s, nurses and PSW’s providing her care over the years and most recently the staff in the BGH ICU, the caring nursing team, Dr. McNeil and everyone we met through the Hospice. We are deeply grateful for those who gave Hailey peace, comfort and love in the final days of her journey. Cremation has taken place.

A celebration of Life for Hailey will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025 from 1pm to 4pm, through the Toll Funeral Home at the Charing Cross Reception Suites. Memorial/Eulogy to be shared at 1:30pm.

In Hailey’s memory, donations to the CNIB, SPCA or the Stedman Community Hospice, would be gratefully appreciated

Ken Bjorn, Student

August 11, 1968 ~ June 24, 2025

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Ken Bjorn on June 24, 2025. Ken passed away in his sleep of natural causes. He leaves behind his beloved wife Bobbi-Lynne, loving daughter Kam, devoted mother Myra Bjorn, brother Geoff (Diane), nephews Mitchell and Hayden. Also survived by numerous relatives in Canada and overseas. Predeceased by his father Martti Bjorn, grandparents Margaret and Howard Graham, Kaarina and Jouko Bjorn, uncles Paavo, Seppo, Andy and Esko Bjorn.

Ken attended the W. Ross MacDonald School for the Blind in Brantford during his elementary and early high school years. He graduated from Hillcrest Highschool and continued his education in the Human Resources and Social Work Programs at Confederation College. Ken was born with less than 10% vision but that never held him back. Early on in life Ken enjoyed riding his bike everywhere, learning to cross country ski and moving on to downhill skiing, but his greatest passion was in the swimming pool, where he achieved many accomplishments locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally. His international success allowed him to achieve his goal, selected as a member of the Canadian Team that competed in the 1988 Paralympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, where Ken exceeded all his personal best times. Ken's athletic achievements led to his induction to the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

His independent nature throughout his life served him well. Ken's love for music was evident in his ability to recall songs and artists with great ease. He also enjoyed travelling, socializing with family and close friends. Ken enjoyed conversing with people and these encounters often led to lifelong friendships.

Ken's involvement in sporting events, volunteer, and advocacy for people with disabilities continued throughout his life. He had a large group of family, valued friends, teachers, and coaches that were supportive of him throughout his life. Ken's friendships meant a great deal to him, as these kept him going through the twists and turns of life. Ken most recently found himself content and happily married. He continued volunteering at the Thunder Bay Border Cats games, where he loved to be with people, assisting where needed and yes, socializing being his favourite pastime.

We would like to thank the Thunder Bay Border Cats for the tribute to Ken on July 27, 2025, prior to the start of their home game. We also thank Diane Imrie for her June 28, 2025, article in the Chronicle Journal, detailing Ken's sporting accomplishments, as a tribute to his lifetime achievements. Lastly, not to forget the many online posts serving as a reminder of Ken's sporting accomplishments, along with his personal life connections that meant the world to him.

As per Ken's wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on July 25, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Current River Community Centre located at 450 Dewe Avenue in Thunder Bay. If friends so desire, donations in Ken's memory can be made to the Charity of Your Choice.

Ken, your photographic memory, quick witted sense of humour and passion for life will be lovingly remembered, and dearly missed.

Patti leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished by her devoted husband, William Scott Mills, her partner and companion for 22 beautiful years. She will forever be remembered as a loving mother to her daughters, Chauntelle (Tyler) Balicki and Janal Ferras, and as a devoted Nonna to her beloved grandchildren: Haley, Lexie, Brodey, and the little one she was so excited to meet this April. Sunsets at Bogies held a special place in her heart, as did her treasured cruise vacations and weekend escapes to Blue Mountain.

With a heart full of compassion, Patti devoted her career to nurturing others. She worked as a Residence Counsellor at W. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of mum just 9 days before her 89th Birthday. Survived by her children, Sheila Wilmot (Maarten) and Sean Wilmot (Kris) and her three grandchildren, Clara, Cassidy and Alex Wilmot.

She took great pride in finishing her university degree while raising two children on her own. After a 30-year teaching career that took her from various schools in Toronto to W Ross Macdonald School for the Blind in Brantford and finally at the Milton correctional facility; she retired and travelled extensively with her husband Ben (2012). Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii to name a few of their destinations, she enjoyed them all.

We want to thank the staff at Freeport Campus Grand River Hospital for their wonderful care the last few months.

She was an incredibly proud Mother and Grandmother; always there to support her grand children in school or any of their interests. Always an avid reader with a sharp wit, happy to stop and chat with anyone she met. I know mom would have wanted us to have a Crown Royal on the rocks and share a toast to a life very well lived.

Wayne Gordon Lowery

November 10, 1950 - December 31, 2024

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Wayne Gordon Lowery on December 31, 2024, after a battle with Progressive Frontotemporal Dementia, throughout which he worked tirelessly to live with purpose and integrity via his love for his daughters, grandchildren and his wife.

Wayne was a devoted father to Allyson, Rachel and Meghan. He approached life with endless curiosity, a trait he passed down to his daughters. He leaves them with many great memories, above all he will be remembered for the fun he injected into every activity and adventure they shared with him.

Cherished husband to Vicki Patterson, and brother to Frank Lowery, Jill Lowery and Joanne Lowery. He leaves behind many great memories shared with his nieces and nephews.

Wayne was known for engaging fully and playfully with the world and this was no more apparent than in his role as a respected educator at the W. Ross McDonald school - a job he truly loved. He spoke fondly of his colleagues with whom he shared strong friendships and hobbies, this camaraderie was important and special to him.

Wayne was a man happiest when in motion. He maintained an unwavering love for sports and the outdoors, joining his lifelong friends on camping trips and the ski slopes.

Wayne will always be remembered for his gift of bringing laughter and joy into the lives of so many... and let's not forget those age-defying luscious locks.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with invitations to come. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Society in Wayne's memory. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at mccleisterfuneralhome.ca

In Loving Memory of Kyle Reis

With profound sadness, we announce that Kyle Reis went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the age of 24. Though his time with us was far too brief, the love he shared and the joy he spread will forever remain in our hearts.

Kyle will be lovingly remembered by his parents, Lidia and Helder, and his sister, Alesia. He was a cherished grandson of Lusa and Leonel Picanco, and Ligia Sousa and the late Antonio Reis. His family was his greatest treasure, and their memories with him will remain a constant source of comfort and strength.

Kyle had a gift for making everyone around him feel truly special. He loved everyone he met and always treated others with kindness and warmth. He had a deep sense of empathy, always caring about people’s feelings, and he had an uncanny ability to find just the right words to bring a smile to your face or lift your spirits when you needed it most.

He was a unique soul, a true ‘Gentle Giant’ who believed in the power of prayers for all. His faith guided him, and he shared his belief with those he cared about, offering hope and comfort through his gentle words and thoughtful nature.

Kyle found joy in his time at W. Ross MacDonald School, which became a second home for him, and in the friendships he made at Camp Lake Joe. He was always eager to lend a helping hand, to learn something new, and to share his love with those around him. His puppy, Rozy, brought him endless joy, as did the close bond he shared with his cousin Amy.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 21, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Toll Funeral Home, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford, with a Funeral Service to follow in the Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Those who wish to honor Kyle’s memory may make donations to the Brant County SPCA, reflecting his love for animals and his desire to bring kindness to the world.

For those who wish to support Kyle's family during this challenging time, please visit this GoFundMe page. Your generosity will help ease the financial burden of the funeral expenses and provide much-needed support to his loved ones as they navigate this loss. Thank you for your kindness and compassion.

Kyle’s loving heart, his ability to comfort and uplift others, and his unwavering belief in the power of prayer have left a mark on all who knew him. Though he is no longer with us, the warmth of his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched. Rest in peace, dear Kyle your legacy of love, kindness, and faith will live on forever in our hearts.

Wilma Abriel

May 18, 1925 - October 11, 2024

Wilma Dora Abriel died unexpectedly at Brantford General Hospital October 11, 2024.

Wilma is survived by her niece Susanne Wilson, and nephew Robert Abriel; grandniece Catherine Cameron and grandnephew Robert Auger; a great niece and three great nephews.

Wilma was born in Hamilton and following the tragedy of her mother's death and father's abandonment was raised by her Chadwick grandparents along with four maiden Chadwick aunts in Hamilton's North End.

Wilma made her confession of faith at age five and never wavered in her belief of the salvation brought by the resurrected Jesus. She was a graduate of the London College of Bible and Missions and worked as an itinerant religious education teacher for the Norfolk public school board for several years. For many years, until her retirement, she was employed as a house mother at the Brantford School for the Blind.

In retirement Wilma took up painting with watercolours and at age 90 had her first showing at the Station Coffee House and Gallery. About the time of her show she purchased a computer to keep up with her painting friends.

Wilma was a chorister and soloist for many years. Upon retirement she purchased an organ and played it every day including her time living at Riverview Terrace.

An important part of her life was writing, both poems and her book "Storms and Rainbows" published in 2001.

With age her physical health declined but her mind was in complete control of her life as she navigated the halls of the John Noble Home in her electric wheelchair.

Wilma had a lifelong interest in others and their activities and maintained contact with them for many years. Her summers at the Triple C Bible Camp near Port Dover expanded these friendships. This interest in others was active right up to her death and included participation in the Seniors and Kids Intergenerational Programs (SKIP).

We appreciated how Wilma was truly blessed by the care she received at both Riverview Terrace and the John Noble Home.

Family and friends will be received at Toll Funeral Home, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 3pm-5pm and 7pm-9pm. A Memorial Service will be held in the Toll Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 11am.

Memorial donations may be made to her long-supported charity Hope and Healing, 3844 Stouffville Road, P.O. Box 800, Whitechurch-Stouffville, ON L4A 7Z9. Messages of condolence may be sent to www.tollfh.com

Sarah Loft

September 1, 1978 — October 10, 2024

Woodstock, Ontario

Sarah Jane Loft, passed away peacefully on Thursday October 10, 2024 with mom by her side at Sakura House, Woodstock, Ontario.

Sarah is survived by her mom Teresa, her brother Ryan who meant the world to her, nephews Logan and Carter, and niece Addyson. She will be missed by her aunts and uncles, Virginia Minihane, Sue Kirkpatrick, Cathy Loft (Deb Kelly), Dianne Loft (Garry Honcoop), Mary Jo Piche, Emily (Larry) Piche, Jackie White (Gary Price), Helen Carter, and Loretta White, and by her many cousins. Sarah was predeceased by her father Richard ‘Dick’ Loft, Grandparents Richard Charles Loft and Norma Jean (nee Bell) Loft, Patrick A. White and Agnes (nee Childs) White, and by her Uncles Peter Loft, Bill Minihane, Bev Kirkpatrick, and Pat Carter.

Sarah touched the lives of many in her 46 years that will always hold a special place in your hearts. The memories she left behind, the courage she had for life and what it threw at her; she challenged herself with her heart and soul until the end. As she said to me "that damn kidney"; she wished it would have lasted longer and because it lasted as long as it did (19 years), we have all those precious Sarah moments....her smile and laughter, her love of life, her strength, and her courage to endure so much gives us so much to remember her by.

Sarah is now at peace with her dad who held a special place in her heart. They did so many cool dad and daughter things together it is difficult to list them all. When she went to the blind school, events like Canada’s Wonderland especially, he would go and get her instead of busing with the rest of the students. They went together, just the two of them, and had a blast on the rides. That was one of her most favorite times.

There are the many years of family and friend’s beach/cottage memories. Sarah loved the campfires made by her brother Ryan and marshmallow treats - they were her fav. There are the stories of the “dock rock” and catching a fish through the eye (LOL) with Dana Kent. The famous “Boris” the yellow lab who she always imitated his tail hitting the deck at the Jordan’s and how he turned his nose up for some reason at mom’s gravy, if you can imagine! That was always a good story she would tell. Sarah would want you to treasure your special Sarah memories, her love for you and of life, and what it meant to each of you is what she left behind as her legacy.

My love, as you know, for Sarah was beyond measure and I will always have my lifetime of memories of our special “Sarah and mom” times together. There were so many…

A Celebration of Sarah’s life will be held on Saturday November 16, 2024, from 1 to 4 pm, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 55, 642 Dundas Street, Woodstock, Ontario.

If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sarah can be made online or by cheque to VON Oxford Sakura House, 715180 Oxford County Rd 4, RR #5, Woodstock, Ontario N4S 7V9, or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Arleigh Hanson, Student

Arleigh HANSON

1942 – 2024

Arleigh was born in Dinsmore Hospital, SK, on May 11, 1942, the first child of Harry and Rose (Leonard) Hanson, and the first grandchild on both sides of the family. It was quickly discovered that Arleigh had a rare condition called anophthalmia, which simply means, "without eyes". His parents rose to the challenge of nurturing a boy who would never see as others saw. When Arleigh's brother Alden arrived 3 years later, they became best chums. It was a heart-breaking experience when Arleigh's only option for education was a boarding school, the Ontario School for the Blind in Brantford, ON, 2000 miles from home. Arleigh's parents and little Alden spent 5 winters in Brantford during this time so they could enjoy being together on weekends. As a lad of 11, Arleigh, having listened to the Gospel of Christ, made a definite life choice to serve God.

Arleigh was Saskatchewan's first blind student. He attended Queen Elizabeth Country School south of their family farm for Grades 9-11 and then Dinsmore High School for his final year, graduating with "flying colours". The attempt at university, however, proved frustrating due to the lack of appropriate aids.

Arleigh found work in the dark room at St Paul's Hospital, developing X-rays. He also studied in Toronto to become qualified as a "CNIB Field Man," travelling in SK to help others who had become blind. His intensive course in Toronto to become a Registered Massage Therapist, pioneered the way for other blind students. This developed into a rewarding lifelong career in Outlook—the best town in SK! His sensitive hands gave relief to the pain of many grateful patients.

In April 1990, Arleigh married Muriel Holland, originally from Emo, ON, and they spent their 34 happy years in Outlook. In Arleigh's health, Muriel's devoted care made it possible for him to pass away in the familiar surroundings of their own home.

Arleigh was predeceased by his father Harry in 1987; his mother Rose in 2010, and his brother Alden in 1997. Remembering him with love and precious memories are his wife Muriel Hanson; sister Margaret Hanson; sisters-in-law Anne (Hopkins) Hanson and Beverly Holland; brothers-inlaw Harry Holland and Arnold (Ruth) Holland; nephew Jason (and Andrea) Hanson; and niece Jody Hanson, as well as dear cousins and other friends.

In honour of Arleigh's memory, please take time to share a kind or cheerful message today, or a donation to a local charity of your choice.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Outlook Civic Centre, Outlook, SK. on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., fellowship to follow. The committal will take place at Outlook Cemetery, Outlook, SK. To view the recorded service and share memories and condolences, visit outlookfuneralchapel.com. The recorded service will be available on August 7, 2024. Honoured to serve the family is Outlook Funeral Chapel 306.867.8255.

Sheila Irene Boehme

June 30, 1939 ~ June 29, 2024

84 Years Old

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sheila Boehme on June 29, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Sheila Irene Boehme was born June 30, 1939, in Sudbury, Ontario to the late Wesley and Mary (Ferris) Boehme. She was predeceased by her sister, Mabel. Her early years were spent at Burwash Prison Farm, where her dad worked for correctional services, before they settled to live in Brantford, Ontario. She attended high school at BCI in Brantford, then Teacher’s College in Hamilton. She taught for many years at the School for the Blind in Brantford. Sheila and Grace were avid sports fans and met when they played for the Brantford Blues Ladies basketball team which was later (2013) inducted into the Brantford and Area Sports Hall of Recognition. From a young age, Sheila made frequent trips to the family farm in Palmer Rapids where her uncle, Oscar Boehme, resided. The farm was SPECIAL to her, so when she retired, it was no surprise she returned there, where she lived with and looked after Oscar in his later years. Many changes were made over the years Hydro, indoor plumbing, combination wood/oil furnace and a new addition put on. Life on the farm included gardening, haying, cutting and piling wood in the woodshed, and the animals , calves, lambs, sheep, rabbits, ducks, geese, dogs and cats. Grace and Sheila enjoyed skiing in the winter months, both cross country and downhill. Mount Madawaska, in Quebec and out west. After Oscar had died, when Grace retired from nursing in 1996, she joined Sheila on the farm. Sheila had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995. Sheila made many friends over the years, many of them lasting several decades and they still kept in touch till the end. Over the past several years, several of “us older gals” met monthly to play Rummoli or Quirkle-Irene Marx, Shirley Davis, Marion Mantifel, Lorna Bob, Ellen Musclow, Sheila and Grace,- good friends, good times, great snacks. Sheila was intelligent, talented (sewing, knitting, crochet, cupboard making). She was community minded, and was an active member of the Emmanuel Evangelical United Church and the UCW. She and Grace were married on the farm on August 31, 2011, but, unofficially, she had been a member of the Elliott family since the 70’s. Sheila was the beloved wife of Grace Elliott, sister-in-law of Linda Elliott, Don Oates (late Phyllis) and Sandra (late Barry) Elliott. Aunt of Derek Oates (Trish), Cameron Oates, Adam Elliott and Marianne Elliott. Predeceased by Lorne and Myrna (Elliott) Hibbard. She is also survived by several great nephews and great nieces and her cousins, Marlene Miller & family and Dale Rolfe & family. Anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory may send it to St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry’s Bay or to a charity of their choice. As per Sheila’s wishes cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Emmanuel Evangelical United Church, Schutt Ontario on July 12, 2024 from 10am until service time at 11am. Rev. Elaine Kellogg officiating. Virginia willms (nee Philpott), Student

Virginia (Ginnie) May (nee Philpott) Willms

On May 20, 2024, passed away peacefully in her 90th year.

She is survived by her cousin Jo-an Bullen and families.

Ginnie was predeceased by her husband, Charles Henry Willms and her parents, John Arthur Hinton Philpott and Elsie May Wright.

Even though Ginnie was blind from a young age, she pursued a full life in spite of her challenges. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.

After attending The Ontario School For the Blind, she attended Brockville Business College.

Her many jobs over the years included dicta typist, stenographer, rehabilitation teacher, proofreader and secretary.

She travelled, unaccompanied to study at the Chicago Bible College, earning a Bachelor of Religious Education degree.

Upon returning to Toronto, she attended a Billy Graham Crusade which changed her life. From then on, she had a close, faithful walk with God. She became a regular attendee of churches wherever she resided.

After a visit to Goderich, she decided to move here. Ginnie became an active member of Knox Presbyterian serving as an Elder, Secretary of a committee, started prayer groups and was a member of the Arthur Circle Women's Missionary Society. It was at one of those meetings, that she heard about the Divine Fellowship School for the Blind in Kalkata (formerly spelled Calcutta), India and she decided she would fulfill her longtime desire to do mission work. Off she went, twice, unaccompanied, to that school.

While living at Goderich Place Senior Facility, she conducted Bible studies for residents and sent them out to others by email. She also had her life story "My Life with God-Blind But Challenged" published while there.

Certainly a "Life Well Lived!" A celebration of life will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Goderich on July 4 at 2 p.m.

Seeing as she requested her body to be donated to science, her interment will be at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St Catherine's at a later date.
